10:00 am – 11:00 am Bird Activity
Join us for a Ranger guided hike along the Petrified Forest Loop Trail (1.0 miles). Along with attending a Ranger guided hike, we will also be looking out for birds and completing some activities from the Great Backyard Bird Count. Please be ready around 10 am to attend the guided hike. Bird activity can be completed at any time during your stay, ask and Ranger at the front desk for a copy. Be ready to hike with comfortable clothing, sunscreen and water.
11:00 am – 12:00 pm So you wanna be a Paleontologist?
Participate in a Paleontology dig at our picnic tables outside of the Fossil Learning Lab! We will be creating fossils out of Popsicle sticks, burying them in a sand pit, and then digging them out using tools Paleontologist use. Event will run through the 1 hour time frame.
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Make your own fossil
Learn about the different processes of fossilization while creating your own compression fossil from 34 million years ago! Event will run through the 1 hour time frame at the picnic tables outside of the Fossil Learning Lab.
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Fossil Learning Lab
Enjoy a self-guided tour of the Fossil Learning Lab. A Ranger will be present to answer any questions you may have. In the Lab, you can go through shale to find fossils, look at them under microscopes, complete one, two or three of our Junior Ranger books and learn about the geology and the animals that run through the park. Event will run through the 2 hour time frame.
We are located at approximately 8500 feet above sea level. Mountain weather can change rapidly, please prepare with adequate clothing and water.
